Lato Elected Head Of Troubled Polish FA

Ex-Poland international Grzegorz Lato, 58, was elected Thursday as the head of Poland's governing soccer body, the PZPN.

"We are determined to change the image of Polish football," said Lato after his victory. "I am determined to... make it transparent and pure and for this to culminate in the success of Euro 2012." Before the vote he had promised to "put an end to corruption in Polish soccer for once and for all."

Earlier this month the Polish government sacked the PZPN leadership for what it said was the body's failure to tackle soccer's widespread corruption. FIFA and UEFA nixed that move, saying that political interference in the game's administration was unacceptable. The government retracted the sackings when it was threatened with losing the co-hosting rights to Euro 2012, which it is staging together with the Ukraine, and opted to hold Thursday's election instead.
