MORNING BRIEFING: UCLA clinches Pac-10 title

UCLA became the first team to clinch a berth in the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Tournament when it won the Pac-10 title Sunday a 2-0 win over Stanford.

Senior Maxwell Griffin scored both goals for the Bruins, who recorded their sixth consecutive shutout. They are unbeaten in six straight games and in 12 of their last 13 games.

CONFERENCE CROWNS. No. 1 Wake Forest exploded for four second-half goals to defeat North Carolina, 4-2, and clinch the ACC regular-season title for the fourth title in the last seven years. Zack Schilawski came off the bench to score two goals in four minutes.

-- Senior Andrei Gotsmanov scored two goals to lead Creighton past Drake, 2-0, before 2,882 fans and take over first place in the Missouri Valley at 3-0-1. The Bluejays will look to claim its third straight regular-season MVC title next Saturday, when they travel to Eastern Illinois.

-- No. 5 St. John's won the Big East Red Division with a 2-0 over Cincinnati. A goal by freshman Brendan King in the 61st minute was all the Notre Dame would need in a 1-0 win over West Virginia that gave the Irish the Blue Division championship.
 
-- Playing in the final regular-season game for retiring coach Joe Baum, Michigan State defeated Northwestern, 1-0, on a goal by Louis Stephens to win the school's first regular-season Big Ten championship in front of more than 2,800 at DeMartin Stadium.

-- No. 6 Loyola (Md.) wrapped up the MAAC title with wins over St. Peter's (1-0) and Manhattan (3-0). Jamie Darvill had all four goals for the Greyhounds.

-- No. 8 UIC beat Valparaiso, 2-1, and Loyola (Ill.), 2-1, to clinch the Horizon League regular-season championship.

-- Top 10 teams that have previously clinched regular-season titles are Akron Mid-American) and Tulsa (Mid-American).

DONIGAN'S CENTURY MARK. Dan Donigan achieved his 100th win at Saint Louis with the Billikens' 4-2 victory against Duquesne. Two days earlier, SLU beat Duquesne, 2-0, thanks to goals by Kyle Hayes and Brandon Barklage. Earlier in the day, their sisters, Ashley Hayes and Andrea Barklage, both scored in a 2-0 win at UMass.

STREAKING WILDCATS. Kentucky came from behind to win for the fourth time in the last five matches when it rebounded to beat SMU, 2-1. The Wildcats (second behind Tulsa in the Conference USA) got the game-winner from defender Stephen Beiro in the 44th minute.
