Residents of Gatehouse Academy
, a long-term residential drug rehab facility in Arizona, are refereeing youth
soccer games for AYSO's Wickenburg Soccer League.
The refs, who range in age from 17 to 25, call games for children from ages 7 to 13. The program is part of the Gatehouse Academy's
quest to give young adults experiences that will "help them re-enter society in a way that is both positive and constructive."
"We absolutely insist on guiding young adults toward a
life of excellence, leadership and service," says Gatehouse Academy Managing Partner, Kent Sherman.
"It is a great experience to ref these games for the kids, and the kids show their
appreciation at every single game," said Jared C., one of the Gatehouse refs. "All of us who go out there come back with a little more hope for the world's youth."
