Casillas Backs Schuster

The Spanish press has been speculating that Real Madrid's German coach Bernd Schuster will be fired if his side fails to beat Real Valladolid this weekend. Despite having led the team to the Spanish league title last season, and despite not having lost a league game since the opening day of the season, Madrid has lofty standards. This week it was booted out of the Spanish Cup by third division Irun, has lost twice in successive games to Juventus in the Champions League, and is one of just three teams in La Liga to have conceded at least one goal in every game.

But goalkeeper Iker Casillas has come out in support of the coach. "The elimination [from the Copa del Rey] deeply hurt the club," he said on the team's official website. "But we are united and grateful for the Club's support. The positive side of this is that it can help us be stronger in the remaining competitions.

"None of our meetings are tense," he went on. "We just get together to solve our problems. What we said will stay between us despite all the rumors. I think these meetings are very positive -- they help the squad come closer together. The players support Schuster. The coach has brought a new mentality to the team and we will always support him."
