Guatemala replaces coach, drops Ruiz for deciding match

[USA-GUATEMALA] Guatemala will face the United States Wednesday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., with a new coach, Benjamin Monterroso, but without its longtime star, MLS veteran Carlos Ruiz.

After Guatemala lost to Cuba, 2-1, in Havana on Oct. 15, Coach Ramon Maradiaga was fired and replaced by Monterroso, who previously coached Guatemala and led it to the 2000 Olympic Games.

The loss left Guatemala three points behind Trinidad & Tobago going in Wednesday's final day of group play for Concacaf's semifinal round.

Guatemala will need to beat the United States and hope T&T loses to Cuba at home to take second place behind the United States and move into next year's Hexagonal.

Monterroso, known as "Mincho," dropped goalie Ricardo Trigueno and Ruiz, two key players for Maradiaga.
