All-American
Kerri Hanks set up goals by freshman
Jessica Schuveiller and sophomore
Taylor Knaack as Notre Dame improved to 25-0-0 with a 2-0 win over Florida State and moved into the Women's College Cup for the third consecutive season.
In the 19th
minute, Hanks knocked a corner kick into the box, where Schuveiller rose above the pack and was able to drive home a header from short range for her collegiate goal.
Hanks was also
involved in the insurance goal in the 77th minute when she drove a ball into the six-yard box where Knaack pounced on the loose ball and scored her fourth goal in the past eight games.
The two assists moved Hanks past
Mia Hamm into a tie for second place on the NCAA career assists chart with former Irish teammate
Katie Thorlakson.
"I couldn't be more pleased with our effort out there tonight," Irish coach
Randy Waldrum said. "That was one heck
of a team we just beat and it took a determined and focused game from everyone up and down our lineup to make it happen. We've always enjoyed tremendous success here at Alumni Field and I'm so glad
we could send this place out the way it deserves to go out."
The game drew a boisterous crowd of 2,332 in the final game ever at Alumni Field (which is being replaced with the brand-new
Alumni Soccer Stadium next season).
The loss snapped a 14-game unbeaten streak for the Seminoles.
"We know that Notre Dame is pretty good on set pieces," said FSU coach
Mark Krikorian. "That is one of their strengths. We addressed it during our training and preparation, but it was a quality service by Hanks and good
timing of the run on the finish."
