4. EUROPE: Reds run riot; van Buyten strikes twice

Liverpool all but clinched a berth in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 win at PSV Tuesday in the first leg of their quarterfinal series.

PSV, which upset Arsenal in the round of 16, was no contest for the visiting Reds, who scored on goals by Steven Gerrard in the 27th minute and John-Arne Riise and Peter Crouch (his seventh in the last seven games) after halftime.

The PSV defense, which was playing without Brazilian center back Alex, looked all out of sorts and succumbed to wave after wave of Liverpool attacks.

Bayern Munich has the edge in the other series that began on Tuesday as two goals by Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten, the second in stoppage time, gave the German club a 2-2 draw at AC Milan.

Milan went ahead on a first-half goal by Andrea Pirlo and took the lead again on Kaka's penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but the giant van Buyten, who hooked home the first equalizer in the 78th minute, scored off a wild scramble on the final kick of the game to level the game a second time.

Bayern lost French defender Willy Sagnol with a knee injury sustained in the second half. He could be out for the rest of the season.
