In Wednesday's UEFA Cup fourth round of games in groups A to D, Galatasaray of Turkey, Ukrainian club Metalist Kharkov, Dutch side Twente Enschede,
Udinese of Serie A and American Oguchi Onyewu
's Belgian team Standard Liege all joined Manchester City in the knockout round of 32 with a game to spare.
Groups E to H play Thursday.
In Group A, a Manchester City team featuring several second-choice players went through the motions in a drab 0-0 tie with last-place Paris St.
Germain. "We didn't create a great deal," conceded Manchester City manager Mark Hughes
. "PSG made it difficult and got a lot of men behind the ball. We weren't
able to create anything to unlock the door."
In the group's other game, Dutch side Twente Enschede edged Germany's Schalke 2-1, taking the lead on a goal that Schalke coach
called "clearly offside." He added that his team played "with passion and industry, but we lacked luck. Here you see the ball come back off the
post, there you see a clear mistake by the referee." Having played all its four games, third-place Schalke must now rely on Racing Santander and PSG failing to win their last games to progress.
In Group B, Hertha Berlin fell, 1-0, to visiting Galatasaray in front of a lively crowd of over 62,000 (including around 40,000 Galatasaray fans) on a penalty kick from Czech
striker Milan Baros
. "Up until the goal we dictated the pace and the play," said Galatasaray coach Michael Skibbe
it, we were too passive." Hertha's Lucien Favre
admitted to his team's "weakness in winning the ball and many technical deficits." In the group's other
game, Metalist advanced thanks to a late goal from Brazilian Edmar
against Olympiakos. In the group's final round of games, the Greek side will play host to
Hertha to decide who takes third spot.
In Group C, Onyewu was among the goals as Standard Liege kept up its perfect record -- three games, nine points, scored five and conceded
none -- with an emphatic 3-0 win over Sampdoria. Sevilla is also looking good to progress after beating Partizan by the same scoreline, including two goals from Luis
, and needs only a point in its final game at Sampdoria.
In Group D, Udinese made sure of qualification by beating Dinamo Zagreb, 2-1, but the other two places are
still up for grabs after NEC Nijmegen scored twice in the last six minutes in its 2-1 win at Spartak Moscow. Zagreb is out, but both NEC and Tottenham Hotspur, who did not play Wednesday, can
progress with a point in their final games in two weeks. SCOREBOARD Group A
