Boca, Tigre and San Lorenzo take Argentine title to the wire

[ARGENTINA] The Argentine Apertura (opening championship) is set up for a thrilling finish in its final round of games next weekend, with Boca Juniors, Tigre and San Lorenzo all level on points. Over the weekend, Boca could only tie, 0-0, at Gimnasia La Plata, Tigre staged a comeback win in a five-goal game after being 2-0 down at Rosario Central, and San Lorenzo beat 10-man Independiente, 4-1.

If the teams finish level on points then there will be playoffs to decide who is champion, with no classification of the teams on goal difference. Even fourth-place Lanus, which won 2-0 at Velez Sarsfield, has an outside chance of taking the title as it lies just two points behind the leading pack of three.

In next Sunday's final round of games, all three league leaders have winnable games against mid-table opposition with nothing to play for. Boca entertains Colon de Santa Fe (10th), Tigre plays host to Banfield (12th), while San Lorenzo must travel to Argentinos Juniors (11th). Lanus is at home to San Martin Tucuman (14th).

Reigning champion River Plate is still in the bottom position after another home defeat, this time to fellow struggler Godoy Cruz (2-1). The only way it can avoid the ignominy of finishing last is by winning at sixth-place Estudiantes, and hoping that Rosario Central loses at Godoy Cruz. Fortunately for River, there is no relegation after the Apertura.

Goals scored Dec. 5-7: 23 in 10 games (2.3 per game)
