1. Former Cal women's coach Boyd lands at Arizona State

Less than a month after he resigned as the women's head coach at California to attend to what were termed "new family priorities," including becoming a new father, Kevin Boyd is back as a Pac-10 coach, this time at Arizona State.

Boyd was reported to be considering a move back to Idaho with his girlfriend but instead takes over the Sun Devil program formerly headed by Ray Leone, who became the women's head coach at Harvard.

Boyd, 38, was instrumental in building Cal into one of the top programs in the Pac-10. In his 10-year stint as the Bears head coach, he collected a 124-63-20 record and eight appearances in the NCAA tournament. Last year, Cal finished with a 12-5-5 record and made a run to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

SAN DIEGO STATE. The San Diego State women's program has promoted assistant coach Mike Friesen to head coach, replacing Mike Giuliano, who left to coach the men's team at Division III Wheaton (Ill.) College. Friesen takes over a program in turmoil. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, four players were dropped from the team and five others quit or transferred during the offseason.
