[SOCCER AMERICA AWARDS] Joe Baum, retiring after 32 years as Michigan State's head coach, earned the 2008 Soccer
America Men's Coach of the Year award after leading the Spartans to Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.
Their 13-5-2 record tied the school mark for wins in a season.
Baum, who began his coaching career under legendary
Bob Guelker at SIU-Edwardsville, was an assistant at Wisconsin-Green Bay and Michigan State, his alma
mater, before becoming head coach in 1977.
He retires as MSU head coach with a 320-228-54 record.
Baum was the goalkeeper on the Spartans' two co-national championship teams in
1966 and 1967.
