Bocanegra, Rennes extend streak

FRANCE. Carlos Bocanegra, making his 20th start of the season, enjoyed a 1-0 win with Rennes over Grenoble. The win extended Rennes' undefeated streak to 18 games - its only loss of the season was at Grenoble Aug. 18. Rennes is in second place, just two points behind defending champ Lyon.

ENGLAND. Goalkeeper Brad Friedel helped Aston Villa to a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion that keeps Aston Villa in fourth place. Everton remained in sixth place as keeper Tim Howard had an easy day during a 2-0 win over Hull City. Clint Dempsey and Fulham couldn't play Blackburn because of a frozen field. The game was postponed until  Monday. In the second division, Reading played without injured keeper Marcus Hahnemann and midfielder Bobby Convey as it beat Watford, 4-0. Center back Jay DeMerit went the full 90 for Watford. Reading is in second place.

SPAIN. Jozy Altidore did not see action for Villarreal in its thrilling 3-3 tie at Valencia, but New Jersey product Giuseppe Rossi, who plays for Italy, buried the 88th minute penalty kick that earned the Yellow Submarine the tie.
