4. TV PREVIEW: Bayern optimistic against AC Milan

WEDNESDAY: UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal, 2nd Leg

Bayern Munich aims to return to the semifinals for the first time since lifting its fourth European Cup in 2001.

Having managed a 2-2 tie, on two goals by defender Daniel van Buyten, in the first leg in Milan, a scoreless or 1-1 tie in Munich would be enough to see Bayern through.

But Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has been hit hard by injuries: defenders Willy Sagnol and Martin Demichelis are out and midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely to recover from a knee injury. Also banged up are Owen Hargreaves, Lucio and Hasan Salihamidzic. But midfielder Mark van Bommel and goalkeeper Oliver Kahn return from suspension.

"I'm optimistic," said Hitzfeld, who coached Bayern to its title 2001 and returned when Felix Magath was fired after a slow start to the 2006-07 season.

AC Milan is without suspended forward Alberto Gilardino. Filippo Inzaghi may start as a lone striker but is slowed by a hamstring injury.

AC Milan has not fared well on the road so far this season, winning only once, against Anderlecht, playing to scoreless ties with Lille and Celtic, and losing, 1-0, to AEK Athens.
