Brazilian soccer's biggest signing will be sidelined as the new season kicks off this week, writes Brain Homewood. Ronaldo, 32, who joined Corinthians last month, is still struggling to regain fitness following a long term knee injury he suffered last February.

"It's best not to make a prediction," said the former Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter and AC Milan player at the weekend. "I don't want to go onto the pitch overweight with different strength in each leg. I have to be 100 percent ready. Ronaldo last played domestic football in Brazil in 1994 as a 17-year-old before joining Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. Corinthians kick off Thursday with a home fixture against Barueri in the Sao Paulo state championship, one of numerous regional competitions which serve as a warm-up for the national championship.
