The decision to cancel ESPN2's regular Thursday night MLS broadcast may not be as bad as it sounds, writes Frank Giase
, because there could be a number of
benefits to spreading the games out across the week from Wednesday to Saturday.
"One of the problems the past two years was that the schedule was locked in and many of the games
turned out to be bad matchups," he says. "Teams also found it difficult to draw fans to the stands on a Thursday night. Under the new arrangement, the schedule will have some flexibility to
televise better matchups."
The move will also allow three teams who play their games on college campuses -- the Galaxy, Houston Dynamo and Chivas USA -- to appear more often on ESPN2,
because there were limits on the amount of games they could play on weeknights when school was in session.
