Keane Could Return To Spurs In Swap Deal

Tottenham Hotspur has offered Liverpool either Aaron Lennon or Jermaine Jenas, plus cash, in exchange for striker Robbie Keane, report Sam Wallace and Ian Herbert. Keane went north from Tottenham to Liverpool just last summer for $29 million.

They describe it as potentially "one of the most remarkable transfers in recent history," but there are still several obstacles in the way of the deal, such as whether Keane, 28, wants to leave Liverpool, where he's reportedly determined to fight for his place. Meanwhile Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was evasive Tuesday when asked if he thought Keane had a future at Anfield.

"Clearly he is our player and in the squad for tomorrow, and that's it," Benitez said. Asked if he planned to sell him in the current transfer window, Benitez replied that he wanted "to see him scoring goals. I don't need to sell any players. We are in the title race, I want to keep all the players. We don't need to sell anyone. He [Keane] knows he can play better. Everyone knows he's better than the one we are watching on the pitch sometimes. When you sign them you have to give them time. Some take longer than others. Some just need a month, others a year."
