Two weeks before it faces the USA in World Cup qualifying, Mexico fell, 1-0, to Sweden, which the USA had beaten, 3-2, on Saturday. A crowd of
46,550 watched the Mexicans fall in Oakland, Calif.
The Swedes needed only a goal from Alexander Farnerud to down Mexico, which meets the USA Feb. 11 in Columbus, Ohio.
The game extended Mexico's winless streak to four games. It limped into the final round of World Cup qualifying, the Hexagonal, going winless in its last three games of the semifinal round
and advancing ahead of Jamaica thanks to goal difference.
Farnerud, a midfielder who assisted on both goals against the USA, struck with an 18-yard shot.
