AC Milan has named on-loan L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham
to its roster for its forthcoming UEFA Cup matches, a development that has left the player
"really happy." Beckham is now available for both the home and away games of the round of 32 meeting with Werder Bremen on February 18 and 26. His loan spell is due to end March 9.
"I'm really happy about this, but especially surprised," Beckham told Italian media. Milan's Chief Executive Adriano Galliani
said that although the team
accepts it may lose Beckham in early March, he was selected for the UEFA Cup squad because of his impressive performances in Serie A action over the past few weeks.
"We need to have
the complete group at our disposal to face Werder Bremen, that is a vital game for us in the UEFA Cup," Galliani said. "As we are missing [Marco] Boriello, who is injured, we made this decision.
But it is also because Beckham's performances are better than expected. He is a player owned by LA Galaxy and it won't be easy keeping him with us. But at this moment he is an important player."
