Quakes Close In On Convey

The San Jose Earthquakes are close to signing U.S. national team midfielder Bobby Convey from English side Reading, reports Elliott Almond, quoting "a Major League Soccer source." The club is also about to sign forward Cam Weaver from FK Haugesund of Norway.
Former D.C. United player Convey, 25, "brings a big name to San Jose," writes Almond. Quakes officials wouldn't comment on the report, but the league source said it was just a matter of clearing paperwork.
Convey, who has been with Reading since 2004, has seen little playing time of late with the Championship (second division) team. Weaver, who played with the Seattle Sounders in 2006 when they were still in the United Soccer Leagues, scored 11 goals in 28 games last season in Norway. "He gives [coach] Frank [Yallop] another option," General Manager John Doyle said. "He's good in the air, a good finisher. Those types of players are hard to come by."
