As he prepares Seattle for its first MLS season with a training camp in Southern California, Coach Sigi Schmid
is looking for help in the back. He turned
to a familiar source.
On Tuesday he traded allocation money to Toronto to get one of his former players, defender Tyrone Marshall
Marshall, 34, played for Schmid with
the 2002 MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy and since starting his MLS career in 1998 with Colorado has also played for Miami (1998-2001) and Toronto as well as the Galaxy. Los Angeles traded him
to TFC in 2007, and last year he played 24 games (23 starts) without scoring a goal or registering an assist.
In 248 MLS regular-season games, Marshall has scored 13 goals and been
credited with 17 assists. He's played 21 playoff games, scored one goal, and registered two assists. He also played for the Galaxy during its 2005 championship season.
"The addition of
Tyrone brings us speed and experience to our back four," said Schmid, who coached Marshall in Los Angeles from 1999 to 2004. "He's a player I know well from my time in Los Angeles. He has two
rings to his name and that championship mentality is something we can always use."
Ex-Red Bulls defender Jeff Parke
, claimed by Seattle in the expansion draft, has yet to sign an
MLS contract to replace the one that expired in December. Including SuperDraft picks, players acquired in the expansion draft, USL-1 Sounders and trialists, a slew of defenders is with the team
during its camp.
Schmid divided his players into two squads, with each playing a half, for a 3-1 defeat of the Galaxy Monday in a training match. Another group faced Chinese League
champion Shandong Lenang on Tuesday at the team's training base in Ventura.
Seattle's first regulation match is Wednesday against the PDL Ventura County Fusion. It plays San Jose
Friday. Fredy Montero
converted a penalty kick and Roger Levesque
and Sanna Nyassi
scored late goals for Seattle after a goal by Eddie Lewis
in the third
minute gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. Schmid used most of his projected starters in the first half, including goalie Kasey Keller
, No. 1 SuperDraft pick Steve Zakuani
, and forward Nate Jaqua
. A foul on Zakuani in the penalty area provided Montero with his penalty kick.
Among the trialists playing against the Galaxy were
ex-Wizard Ryan Pore
. There are several members of the USL-1 Sounders vying for a spot on the MLS roster.
Cuban forward Reinier Alacantra
, who was released by Chivas USA
over the weekend, was in camp to visit fellow countryman Osvaldo Alonso
but is not expected to join in training sessions.
