Will Gomez-Moreno Work For D.C. Second Time Around?

"Never go back," 1980s psychedelic-surf band Camper van Beethoven once wisely sang, but were Christian Gomez and D.C. United listening? Pat Walsh analyzes the return of the Argentine playmaker to the scene of his greatest days in Major League Soccer,  and wonders whether the 34-year-old, in tandem with Jaime Moreno, 35, can work the magic like they did back in 2004, United's last MLS title year.
United is effectively writing off 2008, says Walsh, and trying to revert to its 2007 form, when it won the Supporters' Shield. On the plus side, "there should not be a feeling out period to the start of the season thanks to the familiarity of Gomez. That should negate a slow start, which effectively doomed United's playoff chances" last year.

On the down side, age is not on their side. "Adding U.S. Open Cup games and Champions League again in the fall and United could be looking at 40 games or more this season." Those would not be "the most favorable of circumstances for the long-in-the-tooth attack. Time is short for this group to succeed, meaning this is the last time the band gets back together. Should it fail, which it will with the current defense, Gomez won't be the only one heading out of town this time."
