Adrian Castro, president of Costa Rican First Division club, was gunned down Tuesday by gunmen on a motorcycle while driving his car on the Interamericana
Norte freeway.
Jorge Rojas, the director of Costa Rica's investigative department, said the killing may have been ordered to settle a dispute.
Castro had extensive sports and business interests. He was jailed on fraud charges in 2000.
Puntarenas was tied for first in its Torneo Clausura group.
