Real Salt Lake blasts D.C. United, 3-0

[MLS] In the opening game of the Carolina Challenge Cup Sunday, D.C. United lost two players to red cards, and Real Salt Lake took advantage.
Luis Miguel Escalada, Yura Movsisyan and Andy Williams scored for RSL, which improved its preseason record to 4-1-1 with the victory. United defender Dejan Jakovic, making his D.C. debut, took a red card in the 35th minute for a wild tackle on RSL defender Chris Wingert, and eventually D.C. would lose three players to injury, yet not until rather late in the match did RSL put the game away.

Rookie Raphael Cox set up the first goal for Escalada in the 49th minute, getting up the left side to hit a cross that Escalada drove into the net. Coach Jason Kreis deployed five subs in the 70th minute, inserting Clint Mathis, Andy Williams, Robbie Findley, Nat Borchers and the recently signed Ned Grabavoy, who joined the team last week after being waived by San Jose.

Six minutes after coming on, Mathis lofted a ball over the United back line for Movsisyan to finish, and in the final minutes, United defender Anthony Peters dragged down RSL guest player Michael Osci at the top of the penalty area. After Peters went off with a red card, Williams curled a free kick into the top corner.

Goalkeeper Louis Crayton injured his quadriceps kicking a ball and in the 11th minute was replaced by trialist Nic Platter, who gave up all three goals.
Fred pulled his hamstring after missing the target with a volley in the 32nd minute and Chris Pontius took his spot. Santino Quaranta suffered an injury while breaking up an RSL attack in the 65th minute and Anthony Wallace stepped in.

On Wednesday, RSL plays host Charleston, which lost to Toronto FC, 2-1, in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, and concludes its stay in South Carolina Saturday against Toronto.

Dwayne De Rosario and Rohan Ricketts scored for TFC, which played the entire second half a man down following the ejection of Adrian Serioux with his second yellow card. Ex-TFC player Tyler Hemming converted a penalty kick for Charleston's goal.
