RailHawks derail Revs in preseason finale

[MLS] A New England team weakened by injuries lost to the USL-1's Carolina RailHawks, 1-0, in its final preseason match Saturday.

Former Crew defender Mark Schulte scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute as the Revs concluded a 12-day stint in North Carolina as final preparation for the 2009 season, which they open Saturday in San Jose against the Earthquakes.

Carolina capitalized on a set play for the game's only goal. Shalrie Joseph went up to head a corner kick but was jostled by an opponent and his clearance went straight up into the air. Keeper Matt Reis came out to collect it but Schulte reached it first and nodded the ball over Reis and into the net.

Kheli Dube shot wide, Sainey Nyassi threatened twice - one shot saved, the other going high --  and Kenny Mansally also forced a save as the Revs pressed for an equalizer without success.

Missing from the lineup were Taylor Twellman (neck pain), Steve Ralston (quadriceps), Mauricio Castro (hamstring), Gabriel Badilla (back) and rookie keeper Zack Simmons (shoulder).

Reis, Kevin Alston and Mike Videira returned from injury to face Carolina after sitting out a match against Wake Forest, a 2-1 Revs victory, a week earlier.
