WPS Players to 'Tweet' Through Inaugural Season?

While athletes in the NBA are being told not to engage in the increasingly popular (but let's face it, incredibly self-indulgent) act of posting personal updates on social networking site Twitter, officials at the WPS are actually encouraging its own, with certain Sol and Freedom players set to to do so during the league's inaugural season opener set for Sunday.

The online outreach was approved by all seven team general managers last Friday in an astute acknowledgment of cutting-edge efforts to get fans involved and excited about the first-year league, with season-long acceptance of the Internet activity to be considered based on this weekend's response. While posts would be limited to pre-game, halftime and post-game periods for starters, substitutes could potentially "tweet" through the match from the bench.

The WPS stance is in "sharp contrast to the NBA, where Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles reprimanded forward Charlie Villanueva for posting a tweet during halftime of Sunday's victory over Boston" behind the thinking that because he was doing might not be focused on the game.
