Good day at the office for Milbrett

[WPS] A last-minute goal by Tiffeny Milbrett gave FC Gold Pride a 2-1 win over the Boston Breakers and marked a storybook ending to the first full weekend of play in Women's Professional Soccer. Milbrett, the former national team star with 100 goals for the USA, had been overlooked in each of the WPS drafts and allocations and only made the Pride after asking for a tryout. She came off the bench in the opener and scored in the 89th minute to cap an exciting game at Buck Shaw Stadium.

On the winning goal, fellow sub Kandace Wilson had her shot stopped by Breakers keeper Kristin Luckenbill and it rebounded to Milbrett, who scored with her left foot.

"I just took a poke at it to bring the ball back under control," said Milbrett. "I knew that I needed to cut it back a little bit and put some steam on it so it could get through there. It was a good day at the office."

Milbrett's goal came 10 minutes after Kelly Smith appeared to have spoiled the Bay Area opener when she scored from close range with a blistering left-footed shot. Smith wasn't done for the afternoon, though. She almost scored a second goal, hitting the crossbar in stoppage time.

FC Gold Pride had taken the lead when Japanese star Eriko Arakawa scored on a flick header off a cross by Tiffany Weimer, the most dangerous player on the field. It was a Weimer back heel that sprung Wilson on the winning goal.

"She is my type of player," FC Gold Pride coach Albertin Montoya said of Weimer. "I wasn't the tallest player and I couldn't rely on physical advantages and she is so creative and unpredictable and I let her play like that.  She's the type of player that excites you, her play was fabulous."

Ironically, Weimer, taken in the third round of the WPSL draft, played for Breakers coach Tony DiCicco at WPSL power SoccerPlus Connecticut.

Montoya also gave credit to Nicole Barnhart, who twice stopped Breakers' No. 1 draft pick Amy Rodriguez on one-on-one situations.

"Nicole was fabulous, she kept us in the game," he said. "I think she is one of the best keepers in the world and I can't say enough about her."
