5. AMERICANS ABROAD: Tie dooms DeMerit & Watford

Watford's stay in the English Premier League will end after one season. The club that won promotion last season with help from American defender Jay DeMerit's playoff goal, tied Manchester City, 1-1, on Saturday to ruin any chances the last-place team had of avoiding relegation. DeMerit, in his 32nd EPL appearance, went the full 90. DaMarcus Beasley started for Man City but left the field in the 35th minute with a muscle injury.

Four Americans were on the field in Fulham's 1-1 tie with Blackburn. Brian McBride and Carlos Bocanegra went the distance and Clint Dempsey played seven minutes for Fulham, now in the midst of a nine-game winless streak and three points above the relegation zone. Brad Freidel was in goal for 10th place Blackburn.

Jonathan Spector stayed on the bench as West Ham notched a valuable 1-0 win over Everton, which has Tim Howard in goal, as the Hammers try to climb out of the relegation zone. Goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and Reading celebrated a 3-1 win over Bolton that lifted the Royals into the UEFA Cup qualifying zone. Oguchi Onyewu was not in the Newcastle squad that tied Chelsea, 0-0.
In the English second tier, Eddie Lewis went 85 minutes for Leeds, whose 1-0 loss leaves it one point within the relegation zone with two games left.

In Germany, Steve Cherundolo was the only American in First Division action as he helped Hannover 96 to a 1-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach, whose Kasey Keller is out injured. Last-place Gladbach is eight points within the relegation zone with four games left.
