[USL-1] The Puerto Rico Islanders gained revenge for their loss to the Vancouver Islanders in last year's USL-1 championship with a 2-1 victory on Saturday at
Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium.
Nicholas Addlery, who played the Whitecaps last season, scored both goals for Puerto Rico. Carolina took the early lead in the
USL-1 with its second win, a 1-0 victory over Rochester. In its debut, expansion Austin tied Minnesota, 1-1, at home, while Cleveland, with Real Salt Lake keeper
Chris Seitz playing on loan in goal, fell in its USL-1 debut at Miami FC, 3-1.
Addlery's goals, set up by
Noah Delgado and
Cristian Arrieta (after the offside trap was broken), erased an early Caps' lead on a goal by newcomer
Marcus
Haber.
"We had a very poor first half," Vancouver coach
Teitur Thordarson said. "We
started very well by scoring an early goal, but after that, Puerto Rico were all over us. I felt we turned off a little bit after scoring that goal, but fortunately,
Jay Nolly was able to keep us in the match with some important saves."
Carolina won in card-littered match that featured three red cards and seven yellow cards.
Sierra Leone refugee
Sallieu Bundu, who came over from Cleveland with Coach
Martin Rennie, had the only goal against
Rochester.
Former Miami Fusion star
Diego Serna was the star in his debut for Miami FC, scoring one goal and an assist against the City Stars.
The game marked the debut for the Blues at the Fusion's old home, Lockhart Stadium, but they drew only 2,105 fans, the lowest crowd of the season in USL-1.
Austin drew 4,891 fans
at Nelson Stadium for the Aztex's USL-1 debut.
