Playmakers Off to Slow Starts in MLS

The "No. 10's," creative attacking midfielders who should be slicing defenses apart, have started sluggishly in the young MLS season.

Players like Christian Gomez, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Sacha Kljestan, Mehdi Ballouchy, Stuart Holden, Steve Ralston, Jorge Rojas, Javier Morales, David Ferreira and Bobby Convey have all struggled to conjure the creativity and cutting-edge attacking expected of them. None of these players have stamped their names on the list of the league's assist leaders.

Many explanations account for such limited production: bad luck, injuries, form and tactical adjustments to new positions and teams. Whatever the reasons for underperformance, many MLS teams are now struggling to make those small adjustments that can unlock the creative and lethal plays that these players get paid to make.
