U.S. national team defender Michael Orozco
started for Mexican club San Luis, which earned an unlikely
place in the in the knockout round of the Copa Libertadores thanks to the results on the last day of group play.
San Luis scored two second-half goals to beat Group 8 leader Libertad,
2-0, in Paraguay and overtake Universitario of Peru on goal difference. Universitario fell to San Lorenzo of Argentina, 2-0.
Orozco played the entire 90 minutes for San Luis. Jairo Patino
's free kick gave San Luis the lead after 58 minutes, and Jose Reyes
clinched the win in stoppage
The only other American on a team in the Libertadores Cup is California-born Jesus Padilla
, who has yet to play in the first five games
for Guadalajara, which is involved in a tight race for advancement to the knockout phase in Group 6.
Mexican national team striker Carlos Ochoa
who went to high school and college in California, also plays for Chivas.
