Obama: World Cup would be 'diplomatic coup' [VIDEO]

Obama, who recently wrote a letter in support of the U.S. bid effort, said it would be a thrill to have the World Cup return to the United States.

"The interesting thing about soccer in that is it is extremely popular among children," Obama said, "but we've never seen it catch hold as a major national support. We have our own league but it is not at the level it is in other countries."

Obama added that their would be multiple benefits to hosting the World Cup.

"Having the World Cup here would be huge for the sport in the United States," he said, "and would be a wonderful diplomatic coup where we could show what a wonderful country it is to everybody who  participates all around the world."
