Shearer to Negotiate Contract and Control

Geordie legend Alan Shearer will sit down with Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias on Tuesday to discuss his and the club's future.

Following relegation from the Premier League on Sunday, Shearer said that the floundering Tyneside club required root-and-branch reform and Newcastle's former No. 9 will demand things get done his way if he is to push the club back into the top-flight. In addition to a long-term contract, Shearer will ask for full control of all player recruitment and a budget between $16 milion to $29 million to rebuild the squad. He will also demand carte blanche to overhaul a squad that has pushed the wage bill to in excess of $110 million.

Former Newcastle owner John Hall criticized the club's relegated squad heavily. "I'm not going to pull any punches," Hall said. "This current side is rubbish. Useless." As relegation could cost the club around $80 million in revenue, the club will need to offload a host of its bigger contracts, such as Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Obafemi Martins, Geremi and Claudio Cacapa.
