A Manchester United fan in Rome for Wednesday's Champions League final has been discharged from the hospital after being treated for a stab wound and head injury, police and hospital staff said.
Though police said it was unclear whether the man had been attacked by rival fans or muggers, the assault raised fears of further violence in a city where United fans clashed repeatedly with
knife-wielding AS Roma fans two years ago.
Police sources named the victim as Greg Walden
, 34. They quoted him as saying that he had been set upon in a quiet part of
Rome, near the Vatican. He had been stabbed in the right thigh and either banged his head as he fell to the round or was struck in the head by his attackers, the sources said.
majority of the fans milling around the city today were behaving well. But police said two Britons had been arrested last night for assaulting police officers in Campo de' Fiori, a square packed
with bars. Central Rome and areas near the Olympic stadium have since been put under a total ban on sales of alcohol until tomorrow morning.
