The inaugural Women's Professional Soccer race is a runaway.
The first-place Los Angeles Sol has double the point total of its closest
rival after its 3-1 win over Washington left it with a 12-point lead over the second-place Freedom. The Sol, which got two goals from the league's top scorer, Frenchwoman Camille Abily
, is the only team in the league with a winning record (7-1-3) and positive goal difference (plus-11).
Three minutes after fellow Bleue
evened the score, Abily put the Sol ahead in the 60th minute on a penalty kick awarded after Cat Whitehill
was called for a handball in the box. The goal was her second of the game and sixth of the season -- all coming in the last five games. Brittany Boxx
closed out the scoring in the 66th minute, finishing off a 1-2 with Brazilian Marta
"It was a fairly even game, but we made three pretty
bad defensive lapses," lamented Washington coach Jim Gabarra
. "They have been taking advantage of those all year and they did again today. We got
the equalizer, but next time they were in our end we gave up a hand ball."
Saint Louis Athletica's won its first game at its new home facility, the Anheuser-Busch Soccer
Park, when it defeated Sky Blue FC, 1-0, before a crowd of 3,102. The game also marked the first appearance of the season for former Notre Dame star Amanda
, and she came through with the game's only goal in the 15th minute.
Chicago earned its second tie on its tour of California, gaining a 1-1 tie at FC Gold Pride on
Sunday thanks to Cristiane
's goal. Results: June 7 in Carson,
Calif. Los Angeles 3 Washington 1.
