Qatar Out; Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and North Korea In Hunt

Qatar needed to win its final game to stay alive, but could only muster a 1-1 draw away at already-qualified Japan. Bahrain, which lost to Australia, needs only one point from its final home game against Uzbekistan to clinch third place in Group A, which would secure a playoff against the third-place Group B team. Saudi Arabia set up a showdown with North Korea with a 0-0 tie at South Korea on Wednesday. Saudi Arabia will host North Korea next Wednesday, with automatic World Cup qualification on the line. Saudi Arabia needs to win to qualify while a tie will be enough for North Korea to advance. The third-place teams from groups A and B will face off for the right to play Oceania champion New Zealand for a spot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
