, who won three New Jersey state titles at The Pennington School and captained the USA at the inaugural Under-17 Women's World Cup in 2008,
has endured some trying times this spring. The North Carolina-bound star lost her father Allan
died in April, and longtime girls soccer advocate Charlotte Moran
-- her "soccer mom" -- died of pancreatic cancer in April.
Brooks has been working hard to raise money for cancer research, organizing a
charity tournament and selling purple bracelets in Moran's honor.
"Amber was with her all of the 20 months she had to go through all the stages of pancreatic cancer," Brooks' mother Jean,
who played on a men's soccer team in college, told
"[Moran] wanted to see Amber in her prom dress and she wasn't doing well, but Amber drove to her so she could see her in the dress. She got right up in bed and said, 'You look beautiful.' That was a
Friday, and she passed away Sunday. I don't think she'd let herself pass until she saw Amber in that dress."
