Iran soccer federation (IFF) President Ali Kafashian
denied reports that four national team players were banned for wearing green wristbands during a World Cup qualifier to show their
support for presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi
. FIFA, which prohibits political displays during games and responds with fines, had requested the IFF respond to reports that it
had forced the players into retirement, as reported by several media outlets.
"No disciplinary action has been imposed on any players of the Iran national team by any
authority," read a letter to FIFA from Kafashian. "IFF has not punished any players up to now, but the issue is under scrutiny. If it is confirmed that they wore green wristbands as a
political action, we will punish them according to FIFA rules."
