Battery adds another MLS scalp with 3-1 win

[U.S. OPEN CUP] Former Red Bull Randi Patterson scored two of the goals as the USL-1 Charleston Battery added another MLS team to its list of U.S. Open Cup victims by beating Chivas USA, 3-1, Tuesday at Blackbaud Stadium in round of 16 play.

Jesse Marsch
got the only goal Chivas USA and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake added the Battery's third goal in stoppage time to concluded a hard-fought match that featured 25 fouls, seven cautions, an ejection, and a controversial foul that Chivas USA coach Preki believed should have been a red card.

Patterson opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a poorly headed clearance fell for him to lash the ball past Chivas USA goalie Lance Parker. Marsch equalized in the 28th minute when combination play by Sasha Victorine and Sacha Kljestan produced a cross to the far post that Marsch headed into the net.

Charleston, which reached the Open Cup final last year and by beating Chivas USA posted its seventh victory against MLS opposition, regained the lead at the end of the first half. Patterson played the ball to Darren Spicer, whose return pass got him in behind the Chivas USA back line. Patterson teed up the ball and blasted it past Parker.

With two minutes left in regulation, Paulo Nagamura lofted a ball over the Battery defense. Maykel Galindo collected it and was wiped out by keeper Dusty Hudock's challenge. Referee Mark Kadlecic at first awarded a penalty kick but after consulting with the referee's assistant instead gave a free kick just outside the box. Carey Talley missed the target with his free kick; Preki objected to Kadlecic's decision not to issue a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Talley earned a red-card in stoppage time and Yoshitake hit a searing half-volley from 25 yards out to round out the scoring.
