Depleted New England falls to USL-2's Harrisburg

[U.S. OPEN CUP] They dressed only 15 players and incredibly ended the match with just eight on the field, yet still the New England Revs battled into overtime before losing, 2-1, to Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) in the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday in New Britian, Conn.

Geoff Bloes scored near the end of the first extra period after New England's Jeff Larentowicz and Mo Oduor traded goals in regulation. After Revs coach Steve Nicol used his three substitutes at halftime with the Revs leading, 1-0, Kheli Dube went down with an ankle injury in the 63rd minute and Michael Videira suffered a thigh injury in the 81st minute to leave the Revs with nine men on the field and just backup goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth on the bench.

Missing eight players because of injuries, suspensions or international callups, New England started strongly and debutant starter Stephane Assengue nearly scored in the 26th minute, but Islanders goalie Chase Harrison snuffed his attempt and Kenny Mansally's follow-up effort was blocked.

In the 38th minute, Mansally was fouled at the top of the penalty area and Larentowicz bent his shot around the wall and inside the post.

Nicol brought on Pat Phelan, Sainey Nyassi and Gabriel Badilla in place of Larentowicz, Mansally and Darrius Barnes for the second half. After Assengue's chip cleared the goalkeeper but was cleared by Bloes, New England went down to 10 when Dube left the match.

Four minutes later, Jason Pelletier swung a free kick into the goalmouth near the penalty spot and Oduor nailed home a header. Despite playing two players down for the final minutes following Videira's removal, New England held out through regulation with the score, 1-1.

Harrisburg capitalized on an error by Revs goalkeeper Brad Knighton in the 105th minute. He bobbled David Schofield's corner kick and Bloes pounced to head home the winning goal.

Nico Colaluca went off with his second yellow card in the 117th minute to leave the Revs with eight men.
