They dressed only 15 players and incredibly ended the match with just eight on the field, yet still the New England Revs battled into overtime before
losing, 2-1, to Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) in the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday in New Britian, Conn. Geoff Bloes
scored near the end of the first extra period after New
England's Jeff Larentowicz
and Mo Oduor
traded goals in regulation. After Revs coach Steve Nicol
used his three substitutes at halftime with the Revs
leading, 1-0, Kheli Dube
went down with an ankle injury in the 63rd minute and Michael Videira
suffered a thigh injury in the 81st minute to leave the Revs with nine
men on the field and just backup goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth
on the bench.
Missing eight players because of injuries, suspensions or international callups, New England
started strongly and debutant starter Stephane Assengue
nearly scored in the 26th minute, but Islanders goalie Chase Harrison
snuffed his attempt and Kenny
's follow-up effort was blocked.
In the 38th minute, Mansally was fouled at the top of the penalty area and Larentowicz bent his shot around the wall and inside the
Nicol brought on Pat Phelan, Sainey Nyassi
and Gabriel Badilla
in place of Larentowicz, Mansally and Darrius Barnes
for the second
half. After Assengue's chip cleared the goalkeeper but was cleared by Bloes, New England went down to 10 when Dube left the match.
Four minutes later, Jason Pelletier
swung a free kick into the goalmouth near the penalty spot and Oduor nailed home a header. Despite playing two players down for the final minutes following Videira's removal, New England held out
through regulation with the score, 1-1.
Harrisburg capitalized on an error by Revs goalkeeper Brad Knighton
in the 105th minute. He bobbled David Schofield's corner kick
and Bloes pounced to head home the winning goal. Nico Colaluca
went off with his second yellow card in the 117th minute to leave the Revs with eight men.
