Rhinos knock off Crew on penalties

[U.S. OPEN CUP] Rochester advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday by beating Columbus, 5-3, in a shootout following a 1-1 tie through 120 minutes of regulation play and overtime.

The game was delayed at the start for an hour by rain and lightning, and after Rochester and Columbus scored five minutes apart in the first half on goals by Ty Harden and Duncan Oughton, respectively, penalties were needed to decide this third round U.S. Open Cup match.

The Crew played the last 35 minutes of regulation and overtime a man short after Alex Grendi ran afoul of referee Shane Moody and picked up his second yellow card 10 minutes into the second half.

Rhinos goalie Tim Melia stopped Oughton in the shootout on the Crew's fourth attempt to break a streak of successful kicks, and Ryan Heins eliminated Columbus by marking up Rochester's fifth straight conversion.
