[U.S. OPEN CUP]
Houston succeeded on two fronts Wednesday by playing a lot of its reserves while beating the USL-1 Austin Aztex, 2-0, in the third round of the Lamar Hunt
U.S. Open Cup. Corey Ashe
and Dominic Oduro
scored the goals and goalkeeper Tally Hall
posted a shutout in his first Dynamo start as
Houston advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Charleston, a USL-1 team that has knocked it out of the Open Cup the past two competitions.
After more than an hour of goalless play,
Ashe tucked away a rebound in the 71st minute when Austin goalie Sam Reynolds
tipped John Michael Hayden
's free kick onto the crossbar with a spectacular save. Ashe
nodded the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.
Oduro got on the board in the 90th minute by converting a feed from Ashe to tally his first goal since being acquired by
Houston last month.
Hayden and Erik Ustruck played their first competitive matches this season for the Dynamo and U.S. under-20 midfielder Danny Cruz, just back
from a national team trip to Egypt, played the full 90 minutes. Ustruck will be joining Austin on loan for the rest of the USL season.
Houston plays the Battery next Tuesday in
Charleston, S.C. for a place in the semifinals.
