The commitment issue [VIDEO]

[MLS] David Beckham is set make his return to MLS, but much of the questioning at Wednesday's press conference in Hoboken was not about Thursday's important clash the Los Angeles Galaxy has with the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium (TV: Fox Soccer Channel, 8 pm ET), but about the Englishman's commitment to MLS.  "I'm committed to the MLS as an ambassador," Beckham insisted during the press conference. On Thursday night, fans will get their first chance to see whether Beckham remains committed as a player ...

Interest in the match was a boost for the sagging Red Bulls, who trying to their last season before leaving Giants Stadium over as soon as possible.

Beckham Press Conference:

While not to the level it was in 2007 when hundreds of media were credentialed for Beckham's first game with the Galaxy at Giants Stadium -- -- there was a significant turnout at the W Hotel for the press conference that featured Beckham's first meeting with Grant Wahl since the publication of Wahl's "The Beckham Experiment," in which Beckham's commitment is questioned.

Wahl asked Beckham whether he was fully committed to the Galaxy, given he missed the first half of the 2009 season while playing on loan to AC Milan and will presumably miss the first half of the 2010 season to play for a European club and then for England at the World Cup.

"I'm here, I'm committed to the team, and I'm committed to the cause," said Beckham.

The Englishman wants to play for a European club in order to boost his chances of making the England World Cup 2010 squad.

"I want to be involved in the World Cup," Beckham said. "I've not hidden that fact. But even going back on loan to AC Milan or to another club doesn't guarantee my place in the World Cup squad, if and when we qualify. So at the moment, all I'm concentrating on is being a part of this team and being successful with this team."

Beckham added that he'd decide what to do next after the MLS season.

"But leading up to the World Cup," he added, "the England manager [Fabio Capello] has made it very clear to me that I need to be playing at a European level."
