Smith makes debut for Croatian team

[AMERICANS ABROAD] American Johann Smith made his debut for Croatian club Rijeka in its 1-0 loss Thursday at Luxembourg club Differdange in the first leg of their UEFA Cup preliminary.

Other Americans to play in second-round action were U.S. U-20 Mikkel Diskerud for Norwegian club Stabaek in a 1-1 tie at Albania's Tirana in the UEFA Champions League, Ryan Guy for Ireland's St. Patrick's in 1-1 tie with Malta's Valletta and Marcus Tracy in Denmark's Aalborg 0-0 tie Bosnia's with Slavija in the Europa League.

Smith signed with Rijeka after being released by MLS's Toronto FC earlier this summer.

He had signed with England's Bolton Wanderers out of high school in Connecticut and made one appearance in the Premier League before playing on loan for three clubs, Stockport, Darlington and Carlisle.

He was scoreless in 14 MLS games for Toronto.
