Jason Kreis Retires, Becomes RSL Head Coach

Real Salt Lake Thursday afternoon announced a significant management reshuffling. Team captain Jason Kreis, the league's all-time leading scorer, has now retired from the game and will take over as RSL head coach, effective immediately. Kreis is set to run Thursday's practice in preparation for Saturday's match at home to the league-leading New York Red Bulls. Former coach John Ellinger has been moved to technical director/director of soccer operations. Meanwhile, GM Steve Pastorino has resigned and will be replaced in the coming weeks.

"This signals a new beginning for our franchise," said Checketts. "Jason fits the profile of every great leader I have worked with throughout my career. He is a hard-working, dedicated over-achiever who refuses to accept anything less than maximum effort from everyone around him."

Kreis has become the youngest active coach in Major League Soccer, at 34 years and 127 days old. He is the 11th ex-MLS player to become a coach and the seventh current coach to make the switch. "Becoming a coach in this league has been a serious goal of mine for the past few years," said Kreis. Ellinger will work closely with Kreis on player acquisitions, as well as the development of the RSL Youth Development program.
