Vagenas, Schmid Ready For Galaxy Reunion

No, the story about Saturday's match between the Galaxy and Sounders FC isn't all about David Beckham or Freddie Ljungberg or Landon Donovan's bout with swine flu. Part of what will be interesting to watch is the return to the Home Depot Center for veteran Seattle midfielder Pete Vagenas, a Galaxy veteran of nine years, and still-simmering Seattle coach Sigi Schmid.

"I didn't think it was going to be a big deal, but as we get closer and closer it's starting to become a bigger deal," said Vagenas, who missed a past trip to the HDC to meet Chivas due to injury and after the first meeting with L.A. at Qwest Field, had "37 text messages from old Galaxy guys about this upcoming game, so that kind of set the week in motion for me."

But of course, Vagenas isn't the only one returning to face a former team. "Although he downplays it, Schmid still bears a hard feelings over the way he left the Galaxy," or so says Andrew Winner, who recalls a quote from last year that suggested Schmid "expected to have tenure with the Galaxy, like Alex Ferguson at Manchester United."
