Crew Winning With Depth

The reigning MLS champion Columbus Crew is winning no matter which players it puts on the field. The team has played its last four games without last season's MVP, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, due to a hamstring injury. The Argentina playmaker came on in the 90th minute against FC Dallas, but the 2-0 win was already secured. The Crew (10-3-9) are 6-0-2 in the past eight games since losing to FCD on June 20. They are 10-1-7 in the past 18 matches while extending their MLS record 20-game home unbeaten streak (14-0-6).

In Schelotto's absence, winger Robbie Rogers took the corners. Although Rogers serves a different ball than the Argentina playmaker, the result was just the same. In the 10th minute Rogers' corner found Chad Marshall for a thunderous header to put the Crew in front. Rogers said Marshall makes his job easy. "I try to find Chad. He's such a big guy he's hard to miss. He did a great job to finish it. I just put it in the mix," he said.

Eddie Gaven also started the game on the bench as Emmanuel Ekpo took his place at right midfield. But Gaven entered in the 75th minute and made an immediate impact, scoring the clinching goal with a left-footed shot from 17 yards out after a long run. "I was ready to come on if need be and was," Gaven said. "Whenever you come off the bench you have so much energy that it actually helped because the other team looked a little tired. Robbie played me a great ball and I kept on running down the field. They kept on dropping. I took a touch to my left foot and luckily it went in."
