Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has accepted a three-match ban for his violent stamp on Arsenal's Robin van Persie during City's 4-2 home win last Saturday. The suspension means Adebayor will miss Sunday's derby against Manchester United. He will also miss a League Cup game against Fulham and a league match at home to West Ham United.

Adebayor received another charge of misconduct for his goal celebration that incited visiting Arsenal fans. The English FA said that it will consider this charge at a later date. Adebayor apologized for letting "emotion to take over" after the goal. In addition to his own manager's sympathy, Adebayor has also received sympathy from Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp. "I've got no time for people kicking anybody or being violent on the football pitch and he was wrong to run the length of the field," Redknapp told British newspapers. "But it's very difficult when you're getting abuse throughout the game like he was. It's not celebrating a goal that causes riots. It's idiots who want to start riots."
