Preparing for the stretch run of the season, Chivas USA has made crucial moves to bolster its defense. Last week, Chivas acquired veteran goalkeeper
Jon Conway from New York for a
fourth-round draft pick in 2011. Conway will join
Lance Parker as backup for
Zach Thorton, Conway's former teammate in New York, who leads MLS in
goals-against average (0.82) and is tied for first in shutouts (9).
Conway could see time in Chivas' upcoming match against sister team Chivas Guadalajara, the ChivaClásico
on Wednesday, Sept. 23. In short time with the team, Conway is settling into the team and excited to contribute to the team's playoff push. "The position that we're in right now is
exciting," Conway said. "We have a chance to make a good run into the playoffs. The way the team is playing right now is great and exciting to watch. They move the ball around and really
do a great job."
Chivas should also benefit from the timely return of veteran defender
Claudio Suarez, who has seen limited action since going on the disabled
list at the start of the season. Chivas removed Suarez from the DL before the roster freeze deadline of September 15 so the defender is available for the rest of the season. Like Conway, Suarez
could also see time in the ChivaClásico against Guadalajara, where Suarez spent three years during his time in the Mexican Primera Division.
