PGE Park, the new home of Portland's expansion MLS team, is adding 5,000 new seats below street level of the Southwest side of 18th Avenue. But those seats may not increase the current capacity of
the stadium, around 17,000. San Francisco designers Ellerbe Becket
told the Portland Design Commission that they plan to screen off about 5,000 of the least attractive existing seats
in the upper concourse by using metal mesh or fabric that could be rolled up to accommodate 22,000 if necessary.
Final designs for the stadium are expected late this year.
, a designer with Ellerbe Becket, said construction would probably start in January to finish in time for the 2011 season. The stadium will remain home for Portland
State University football, but will no longer host baseball games.
