Home teams sweep first legs

[USL-1] Defending champion Vancouver, Rochester and Montreal all took leads in their USL First Division quarterfinal series with victories in Thursday's first legs.

VANCOUVER-CAROLINA (1-0). The Whitecaps beat the No. 2 seed RailHawks on residency product Randy Edwini-Bonsu's first-ever goal for the Whitecaps senior team.

With the game scoreless, Edwini-Bonsu came on for USL-1 scoring champion Charles Gbeke in the 57th minute and broke the deadlock 20 minutes later.

ROCHESTER-PUERTO RICO (2-1). Veterans John Ball and Kenney Bertz scored to give the Rhinos the win over Puerto Rico.

Jamaican international Nicholas Adderly scored for the Islanders, who lost star Cristian Arrieta to a red card in the first half. The 2008 Defender of the Year will now miss Sunday's second leg.

MONTREAL-CHARLESTON (2-0). The Impact got goals early in each half from David Testo and Rocco Placentino to defeat the Charleston Battery in front of 11,282 spectators at Saputo Stadium.

The Battery played the second half with 10 men when midfielder Matt Bobo was ejected at the 45th minute after having been booked a second yellow card.
